‘Jesus > Religion’ by Jefferson Bethke [ REVIEW ]

One of my goals for 2016 is to get back to my roots and read more books. As the great Frederick Douglass said, ‘Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.’ Books are a passion – nay, an obsession of mine and always have been. I grew up in the library and my parents fostered my love of reading and learning. With books I have lived a thousand lives, found myself absorbed in different worlds, and learned immensely more than I could have otherwise. I have a goal of reading 100 books this year, along with me!

Jesus > Religion’ by Jefferson Bethke is incredible. It makes you laugh, cry and more importantly makes you think about the difference between religion and a personal relationship with Jesus. I was excited every time I got to pick back up where I left off in this book. Bethke has a way with words and even has insights into the Bible that others older and more studied people than him have not been able to express or understand. He focuses on the church community, God’s grace and on other ‘hot topics’ of the day. He is able to be completely real and honest about his own life and struggles.  I first heard about Bethke when this video came out several years ago on YouTube:

When ‘Jesus > Religion‘ came out I knew because of that video that I had to read it. If you never pick up another ‘Christian’ book, please, read this one! To all those who identify as Christian, this one digs right to the gooey center of your heart, breaking past all the ‘do this’, and ‘don’t do that’s’ that we are used to. As Bethke says, it is love based faith and not fear based faith. To all those who are searching just maybe this book is for you. There are so many things he said that are so personal. I really need to purchase this book so I can go back and immerse myself in it whenever I want.

That’s book 2 of 100! Read all the reviews here.
