‘Wake Up Happy’ by Michael Strahan [ REVIEW ]

One of my goals for 2016 is to get back to my roots and read more books. As the great Frederick Douglass said, ‘Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.’ Books are a passion – nay, an obsession of mine and always have been. I grew up in the library and my parents fostered my love of reading and learning. With books I have lived a thousand lives, found myself absorbed in different worlds, and learned immensely more than I could have otherwise. I have a goal of reading 100 books this year, along with me!

Wake Up Happy‘ by Michael Strahan, with Veronica Chambers is an entertaining and engaging read. It is part autobiography, part self help book. The gist of the book is explaining how he got to each stage of his life- how he lost weight as a child, how he worked hard to learn how to play football and then make it to the NFL, and how he reinvented himself to work in television. It follows his progress through life, skimming over the bumpy bits, and placing emphasis on his mentors and his own inner strength and will to strive to be the best.

The thing that bothers me about this book is the title. I don’t feel like it is applicable to most of the book nor sum it up very well. Only one section where he discusses how he listens to music in the morning to pump himself up for the day and the final chapter really reference morning routines. I feel like it should have been called ‘Dream Big, Work Hard‘ or ‘Make the Best Better‘ (thank you 4-H!!) or ‘How to Reinvent Yourself‘. Anyway, beside the misleading title it is a very enjoyable read with many good ideas for advancing yourself.

I appreciate that most of the time Strahan doesn’t make himself out to be the big NFL tough guy. There are moments he brags on himself but they read more as confidence than coming from a place of self-involvement. Numerous times he admits embarrassments, weaknesses and failures. It seems real. It reminds me of the Michael Strahan I feel I have come to know- at least a little- watching Live! with Kelly and Michael. Two thumbs up!

That’s book 1 of 100! Read all the reviews here.
