Day 6 of our Epic ‘chummy’ trip to the Pacific Northwest was spent driving up to Astoria, OR, and spending the day exploring! It was a rainy day again, but it was spotty and we made the most of it! We went up the Astoria Column, saw the school used in “Kindergarden Cop” and the house used in “The Goonies!” I threw a message in a bottle into the sea, completing a goal on my manifesto, and we drove across the craziest bridge into Washington State. It was a fun day!
We braved a downpour driving up to Astoria, OR, and we finally made it, using the navigation on our phones to wind our way up the nutty streets to the Astoria Column. The column was completed in 1926 to properly salute Astoria’s explorers and early settlers. It is a beacon at the top of Coxcomb Hill, Oregon’s highest point. It was patterned after Trajan’s Column in Rome, Italy and depicts various scenes of the area’s past. We climbed all 164 steps to the top to brave the wind and rain. It was foggy and difficult to see, but we could see enough to know the landscape is gorgeous.

The house used in “The Goonies”!!:
Before dinner I threw my message in a bottle out to sea. If you’d like to read more about that adventure click here. No word yet in response.
After dinner we drove across the craziest bridge ever to get to Washington State. We drove around Cape Disappointment (aptly named), and on to Long Beach. It was very cold by that time, so we snapped a few pictures of some sad looking seagulls before heading back to Oregon.
After our long day running around having adventures in the rain and cold we felt like staying in, so we stopped in Seaside, OR for some of their specialty sodas (and a caramel apple for me) and snuggled up in our hotel room with our re-heated leftovers from the day before and “The Goonies” which we rented from the front desk of our hotel. Fun day!
