Day 2 of our Epic trip to the Pacific Northwest was one of my favorite days from the entire trip. My friend Anna and I greeted the sun over the beach, explored the Redwood Forest, completed another goal on my list by driving trough a Redwood tree and driving on the historic Highway 101, hiked all over God’s beautiful green earth and watched the sun set over the ocean. I wish this was my everyday.
I wish I could begin every morning at the beach- soaking in the beauty, vastness and the power. It’s the only way to wake up.
After we grabbed our lunch of delicious Subway sandwiches to take into the Forest (no road-side diners I know of), we drove south down the Historic 101 Highway into the Redwood Forest. There is no way to describe or capture the feeling or look of the forest accurately. Everything is so big, magical and majestic. There’s no other feeling like it in the world. It’s like you are so small yet so alive- and the smell is gorgeous. You can breathe.
We spent a lovely late morning and afternoon driving and hiking in the forest, we were in nature as it is meant to be. We ate our sandwich lunch tailgate style in the back of our rental car, saw the coastal landscape of Californian dreams, hiked over dirt and pine needles, brushed against Jurassic Park style ferns, and walked inside enormous hollowed out trees. We posed with the ‘Big Tree’, hiked another incredible trail, and stood between trees that touched the sky.
Already exhausted from hiking all over the forest, on the way back to Crescent City we found a coastal trail that we absolutely had to explore. It provided breathtaking views and hobbit-shaped openings in the trees over the trail. We found the ‘Hidden Beach’ and explored as the tide came in.
We had a much needed dinner of comfort food after a long day of nature and incredible experiences, and then booked it back to the Crescent City Harbor to watch the sunset over the ocean.
It was a fantastic, memorable day. I must come back as soon as possible, and plan on a week of hiking and being in the forest.
